Everyone is piling on the case of United Airlines, from internet memes to celebrities and beyond. Now a Japanese official is jumping into the fray.
Last month during a speech at New York City’s Columbia University, Japan’s deputy Prime Minister Tara Aso extolled “his nation’s virtues.”
Despite its economic slump, Aso said the country’s “social fabric has not been torn apart” and “the sense of pride among workers is still intact.” Oh, and also, “Airline crew will not beat you.”
The zinger was a shot at United for its removal last month of a passenger who refused to cede his seat on an overbooked flight. A video of the incident, which showed the passenger’s bloodied face and broken teeth, went viral.
