The Walt Disney Company officially announced plans for an expansion of Hong Kong Disneyland were approved by the Legislative Council of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
The expansion project will begin in 2018 and run through 2023. The theme park will add world-class attractions, and entertainment and themed areas that maximize Disney-branded characters. The theme park will add a Frozen-themed area transporting guests into the kingdom of Arendelle, where casts members can meet characters from the popular movie.
“Hong Kong Disneyland Resort’s multi-year expansion that will leverage some of the most popular stories of the Disney brand including Marvel and Frozen, said Samuel Lau, managing director, Hong Kong Disneyland.
In addition, the project will include a new Marvel-themed area bringing popular superhero characters to life. The expansion includes a new entertainment venue called Moana’s Village Festival with a lively stage show. The main piece for the project is the transformation of Sleeping Beauty’s castle to feature new day and nighttime spectaculars and entertainment experiences.
The original plans called for a $1.4 billion expansion, part of Disney’s commitment to the long-term success of the theme park as a top international tourist destination. Officials hope the expansion will attract a diverse audience from all ages.
