Head to Naples for Business, Amalfi for Balance

Naples doesn’t often make the short list of European business destinations, but for those in sectors tied to shipping, biotech or academia, the regional capital offers strategic value. Home to one of the busiest ports on the Mediterranean and institutions like the University of Naples Federico II, the city blends grit with global relevance. For business travelers, Naples provides an efficient base with direct air links, walkable core neighborhoods and access to some of Italy’s most storied landscapes … especially when you fold in a leisure extension along the Amalfi Coast.

Despite its historical reputation for chaos, Naples has become increasingly business-forward. A growing number of international firms maintain partnerships or satellite offices in the city, including those connected to maritime logistics, aerospace and pharmaceuticals. Italy’s National Research Council and the Technological District of Engineering of the Campania region anchor a local innovation ecosystem, while the port itself, Europe’s third-largest by cargo volume, proves central to the city’s reinvention as a global shipping hub.

Naples International Airport (Capodichino) sits just 15 minutes from the city center, making it one of the most convenient arrivals in Italy. Unlike Rome or Milan, where taxi queues and transfers often eat into your schedule, Naples places you directly into the core. Many of the city’s business hotels cluster in the Chiaia and Santa Lucia districts, offering proximity to corporate offices, consulates and the central business zone without sacrificing walkability or dining access.

Neapolitans rarely conduct business without food. That may mean a Michelin-starred tasting menu in the private room at Palazzo Petrucci or a more relaxed but no less impressive dinner at La Stanza del Gusto, blending creative small plates with Campanian wine pairings. Even pizza can be high stakes: Sorbillo’s upscale location in Chiaia is no stranger to informal negotiations and pre-event catch-ups.

You’ll also find a growing number of co-working hubs, especially useful for freelancers or remote workers needing short-term infrastructure. These venues often double as networking spaces, and some host events geared toward visiting entrepreneurs and digital nomads.

But what makes Naples especially appealing for business travelers is how seamlessly it pairs with a personal add-on. With no connecting flights or overnight trains required, you can go from boardroom to beach in less than 90 minutes.

Amalfi Coast

Just beyond the urgency of Naples, the Amalfi Coast ushers in a slower, more scenic rhythm. Sorrento, technically not part of Amalfi proper, often serves as the gateway. It’s connected by the Circumvesuviana train and by ferry from Naples, and its boutique hotels and terraced cafés offer a gentler landing than the cliffside roads that define the next stretch. For business travelers who can only spare one night, Sorrento allows for the experience without the logistics overhead. Hotel Bellevue Syrene makes an ideal base here, blending Ancient Roman roots with a modernized 18th-century villa and refined indulgence, all with cliffside views across the Bay of Naples.

Continue to Positano, Ravello or the town of Amalfi itself. You can most comfortably reach them all by private transfer through the hairpin turns of this dramatic coast, and each delivers on postcard promises. Positano’s terraced cliffs and Ravello’s gardens at Villa Cimbrone offer panoramic views that feel theatrical in scope, while Amalfi’s cathedral square allows unhurried exploration between Romanesque columns and café tables.

The area affords several ways to shape a visit, depending on time and pace. Private boat charters allow for swimming beneath sea caves or docking for lunch in Nerano, while inland hikes such as the Path of the Gods trace ancient mule routes with uninterrupted coastal views. Ceramics workshops in Vietri sul Mare and quiet corners such as Atrani’s central piazza add texture to the region’s appeal without requiring a fixed itinerary.

When transitioning from Naples to the Amalfi Coast, arrange your transfer the morning after your final business obligation. Avoid Friday afternoon departures, as traffic along the coast can double transit times. If you’re hosting clients, consider inviting them along. Many corporate relationships in Italy are solidified over shared meals and downtime, and an overnight at Monastero Santa Rosa Hotel & Spa or dinner at Da Vincenzo (open seasonally) can go further than another hour in a boardroom.

Remember: Naples and the Amalfi Coast run on very different rhythms. Naples is early, loud and direct while Amalfi is late, slow and hushed. Meetings may start early in the city, but on the coast, your dinner likely won’t begin until after 8 p.m.

The Flight Less Taken: Unsung Carriers Whisk You Away to Far-Flung Destinations

The miracle of flight feels slightly less miraculous these days. Endless delays, cramped seating and shortchanged amenities feel par for the course, and one can easily forget the wondrous fact that you’re hurtling above planet Earth, soaring above the clouds and across the skies to your destination of choice. In the olden days, you were limited to the fallibility of your outrigger canoe or horse-drawn carriage. It’s not hyperbolic to invoke the invention of the wheel when reminding oneself to stay calm and carry on in coach.

Review: Bodysgallen Hall

The National Trust owns more than 500 historic buildings across the United Kingdom, each offering a vivid sense of its particular era. In common with many visitors, I often find myself wondering what it would be like to actually live in such a place. Imagine sitting, for instance, in one of those ancient oak-paneled drawing rooms at night, with the fire roaring and the wind rattling the ancient mullioned windows. I didn’t have to imagine it. Here I was, immersed in history in 17th-century Bodysgallen Hall in North Wales.
