The main British Virgin Islands are not exactly frenetic, but if you decide you truly want to get away from it all, the largely uninhabited Out Islands are for you: a constellation of more than 40 islands and cays with names that range from mundane (Norman Island, Peter Island) to literal (Salt Island, Scrub Island) to piratical (Dead Chest Island) to off-putting (The Dogs, Mosquito Island) to apocalyptic (Fallen Jerusalem). Each of the islands offers something unique. Fallen Jerusalem, for instance, has a volcanic-rubble interior that resembles a ruined city (hence the name). Norman Island is reputed to be the inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island, and rumors persist to this day of buried treasure. One of the greatest attractions of the Out Islands is the wreck of the RMS Rhone, which sank immediately off Salt Island during a hurricane in 1867 with the loss of 124 lives. The wreck teems with marine life and is one of the region’s premier dive and snorkel sites, a living legacy of the B.V.I.s’ colorful maritime history.
