Following two tragedies in five months, the United States was the last major nation to ground Boeing 737 MAX 8 and 9 aircraft last week.
The announcement from the Federal Aviation Administration came last Wednesday, after every other major nation in the region and across the globe already grounded the apparently problematic aircraft.
The FAA’s prepared statement said the decision to ground the family of aircraft followed new evidence procured through extensive data gathering.
There is no definitive timeline for the ban to be lifted, but it will continue until more testing and research can be conducted. According to the FAA, the delay in grounding the aircraft was a result of failure to find any sort of systemic error in the planes during early data collection.
The global panic set in following two crashes involving the 737 MAX 8 aircraft. The first happened in October 2018 on a Lion Air flight in Indonesia. The second crash, which initiated worry of a pattern, happened the morning of Sunday, March 10, on an Ethiopian Airlines flight, which went down minutes after takeoff.
The United States joins Canada, Mexico, China, Australia, the United Kingdom and a number of other nations and airlines that grounded the aircraft voluntarily.
Are you surprised how long it took the FAA to ground the aircraft in question? Do you think the agency was irresponsible? Tell us. Email us at [email protected]. Please include your full name and location.
