The plus side of Madrid’s late-night dining custom is its museums stay open later than elsewhere, so you may have time to visit some of the world’s top art after the business day ends. Just as convenient is the location of the three top art museums in the Golden Triangle of Art, along Paseo del Prado. Top among these — and among the world’s art collections — is the Prado, open until 8 p.m. daily. Featuring European art from the 12th to early 19th centuries, it contains the finest collection of Spanish art anywhere with the definitive collection of works by Francesco Goya.

The Reina Sofía Museum highlights 20^th-century art, with outstanding collections of works by Picasso and Salvador Dalí. Its most famous masterpiece is Picasso’s Guernica, and you’ll find works here by modern masters Miró, Kandinsky, Magritte, Man Ray, Paul Klee and Richard Serra. It stays open until 9 p.m. weeknights except Tuesday.

The third is the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, which fills in the historical gaps between the other two and stays open until 7 p.m. except Monday. Stop en route between these museums to admire the exuberant vertical garden that climbs the wall of the CaixaForum, a contemporary art center open daily until 8 p.m. More than 200 species of plants, 15,000 in all, create a hanging garden of colors and textures as surprising as the art inside.
