Dubai Airports will introduce biometric “smart tunnels” to speed travelers through immigration checks in 15 seconds.
The Gitex 37 technology was unveiled last month in Dubai. The system will eliminate the need for travelers to show passports to security officials during immigration checks.
Passengers will be able to walk through a tunnel while the system uses facial and eye-recognition technology to identify them. The process involves two steps: a stationary iris scan before the tunnel and a facial recognition scan inside. Digital floorboards in the tunnel will change from green to red when the process is finished.
No launch date was announced but officials said the introduction will be accompanied by transportation to the airport in Tesla cars, during which passengers can pre-register their details via smartphone. Luggage weight detection and boarding pass delivery can be completed in the car. Luggage is then automatically transferred through the system for passengers.
