While some people prefer to vacation on the beach with a beer in hand, others prefer trips that don’t involve alcohol. Although people abstain from drinking for a variety of reasons, staying sober while traveling has significant benefits.
“From a psychological standpoint, abstaining offers a heightened sense of agency. You are making choices with full awareness, responding authentically to your environment and the people in it,” said Carolina Estevez, Psy.D., a licensed clinical psychologist at Soba.
Many who don’t drink on vacation find their trips improve because they have more clarity and energy. “You begin to find joy in subtler, more enduring ways,” said Estevez. Moreover, your memories of your trip are likely to be more vivid if they are not blurred by the fog of alcohol.
With a rise in sober and sober-curious travel, it’s easy to find great options for alcohol-free vacations.
Hyatt Hotels launched its Zero-Proof, Zero-Judgment program to ensure alcohol-free guests can enjoy tasty and sophisticated drinks. Bartenders at Hyatt’s Alila, Andaz, Destination by Hyatt, Hyatt Centric, JdV by Hyatt, The Unbound Collection by Hyatt and Thompson Hotels all serve creative cocktails using zero-proof ingredients. Similarly, Tempo by Hilton hotels in New York, Nashville, Louisville and elsewhere feature two cocktail menus. “Spirited” cocktails made with alcohol each have a “Free Spirited” alcohol-free counterpart with a similar flavor profile and sophisticated presentation.
In Maui, select hotels offer zero-proof drinks tailored to guests’ individual preferences. Mixologists ask each patron questions, such as whether they prefer a sweet or savory drink and if they crave specific flavors, from chocolate to mango. Then they create a custom mocktail on the spot. Mixologists at Hokupa‘a at The Westin Maui Resort & Spa, Ka‘anapali, and The Maui Club Lounge at The Ritz Carlton, Maui, Kapalua, stand ready to create zero-proof drinks on demand.
Meanwhile, in Mexico, guests at The Westin Resort and Spa, Puerto Vallarta can participate in a complimentary workshop to learn how to make their alcohol-free drinks inspired by the region’s rich flavors. At the resort’s Flora Bar, guests can order a botanical-inspired mocktail made with locally grown herbs and freshly pressed juices. Similarly, guests at Corazón Cabo Resort and Spa enjoy Mexico’s traditional
drinks with nonalcoholic Blue Agave cocktails; Inspirational Mocktails made with local ingredients like coconut water, pineapple juice, rose petals and mint; and make-your-own nonalcoholic margarita kits that can be sent to their room. The all-inclusive Grand Velas resort in Riviera Maya offers a multicourse tasting menu with mocktail pairings incorporating local flavors.
Cruise passengers frequently like to eat and drink to their heart’s content, but it can be challenging for sober guests to find fun, nonalcoholic drinks beyond soda on board. Princess Cruises introduced its Amore Princess Zero Alcohol Collection, the first stand-alone, nonalcoholic bar menu from a major cruise line. The collection features a range of zero-proof drinks crafted with premium ingredients in collaboration with mixologists from Sips, a renowned Barcelona bar.
Scottsdale, Arizona, makes a fantastic destination for sober travelers. Castle Hot Springs offers several wellness and adventure packages best experienced without alcohol. The resort’s Bar 1896 offers several zero-proof drinks. Mountain Shadows Resort has a delicious mocktail menu at its on-property Hearth restaurant. For more options, retro Hula’s Modern Tiki offers tropical-inspired mocktails, popular Canal Club serves mocktails inspired by the spirit of Havana, and Citizen Public House mixes a variety of drinks using zero-proof distilled spirits.
