South Korea’s most populous province, Gyeonggi is a trove of history and cultural experiences. It includes some of the nation’s most enigmatic cities, including Seoul, the country’s capital; Suwon, the province’s capital; and Incheon, Korea’s major transportation hub and port. Located about one to two hours from each other, the three Gyeonggi jewels offer different experiences, entertainment and team-building activities.
Incheon International Airport serves 100 airlines flying to and from 178 cities. Travelers can use Uber and the Korean Kakao Taxi (KakaoT) app, as well as trains and shuttle buses to reach Seoul or Suwan. Importantly, Google Maps doesn’t work in Korea, so download the local navigation apps: Kakao or Naver.
A metropolis of 10 million people, Seoul rivals the world’s richest urban centers while boasting a uniquely Korean vibe. In Seoul colorful ancient palaces hide between towering skyscrapers, traditional markets mushroom among modern shopping malls, and yesteryear teahouses rival modern coffee shops. For a quick morning grab, look for Ediya Coffee or Caffe Bene, popular chains found in every neighborhood. For a late start or brunch, consider Cheong Su Dang Bakery with its lush, forest-like outdoor space and traditional design.

Take a stroll with clients through a proper Korean market such as Gwangjang, turning 120 years old this year, and they will marvel at mounds of fresh meats, heaps of dried herbs and tanks of live fish while sampling some bites from food stalls. For dinner, opt for one of the numerous Korean barbecue places and then stroll along the Seoul City Wall, built in 1396, to admire the vibrant capital at night. “Seoul is the perfect city for business travelers,” said Karen Zhao, product manager, Intrepid Travel, which leads tours of South Korean cities. “Seoul has so much variety in terms of experiences that there’s something for everyone.”

For enriching exploration between meetings, take your business associates to see Gyeongbokgung, the biggest of Seoul’s five royal palaces. When touring historical attractions, locals commonly wear traditional Korean clothes called hanbok, which include long, graceful skirts with short jackets for women and trousers with overcoats for men. For a truly immersive cultural experience, business visitors can partake in this favorite pastime. Stores near Gyeongbokgung offer beautiful hanbok rentals, ideal for viral Instagram photos. Afterwards, walk up to the Bukchon Hanok Village, where residents still live in traditional homes more than 600 years old.

Contrasting with Seoul, Suwon — a smaller, more easily navigable city that’s home to Samsung Electronics — offers different entertainment options. After hours of planning sessions, your team can enjoy exploring the 18th-century Hwaseong Fortress with an option to take the sightseeing Hwaseong Fortress Tourist Trolley. For a more thrilling experience, offer your clients a ride on a hot-air balloon with a bird’s-eye view of the fortress; the ride accommodates groups up to 30. If you have more time, take your associates to Yongin to see a traditional performance at the Korean folk village, a living museum, about an hour from Suwon.

Traveling to Seoul or Suwon from Incheon International Airport can take more than an hour, so if time is of the essence, consider staying local. Incheon is a cultural and culinary hub swaddled in beautiful nature. After morning brainstorming sessions, take your team to Songdo Central Park or consider exploring some of Incheon’s islands such as Jebudo, known for the so-called “Miracle of Moses” phenomenon, as the sea there parts twice a day, allowing you to reach the island by car; it’s also accessible by cable car.
Once a long day of meetings ends, take your clients to relish the beautiful sunset at Eurwangni Beach with a cocktail in hand. Alternatively, opt for a food tour of the Sinpo International Market and a walk through the Songwol-dong Fairy Tale Village to enjoy its street art and murals. Later, observe the Incheon Bridge lit up at night, a true spectacle. “For business travelers who want to stay near the airport, there’s a lot to see and experience in Incheon,” said Zhao. “It’s a great place to easily get your urban comfort while getting out into nature and enjoying the mountains and the sea.”

Whichever city you choose, if schedule permits, consider a daytrip to the Demilitarized Zone, or DMZ, a buffer zone between the two Koreas and a tourist attraction, the closest to North Korea most travelers will ever be. Visitors can see North Korea up close through binoculars at the Dora Observatory and walk through one of the tunnels North Korea dug underneath its South neighbor in a subverted attack — a one-of-a-kind adventure. Your associates will speak about this uniquely memorable experience for years to come. What better outcome of a business meeting can one ask for?
