Tell us About The Vision Behind OpenSkies.

OpenSkies is a dream. The airline started three years ago to provide a better product at a better price for travelers looking for business-class options from the continental United States to Paris. Our two-class configuration offers affordable options. BIZ BED is a true lie-flat seat, while BIZ SEAT offers a wide seat and is a comfortable way to travel. Our product portfolio and price points address the needs of premium business and leisure travelers. We have great catering and nice wines. BIZ SEAT runs approximately 50 percent cheaper than the competition’s business-class fares.

Each OpenSkies aircraft fits a maximum 84 passengers. Not only is the experience exclusive, but think of how much easier customs, immigration and boarding are with so few passengers. We offer a hassle-free experience that is different from the legacy carriers.

We started with a three-class concept, which we quickly learned was not the way of the future. As an airline, we are not afraid to change, and that gives our offering something very special.

What Is OpenSkies’ Service Philosophy?

Soon after the airline launched, we completed the first totally integrated European airline merger with L’Avion. L’Avion was known for exceptional service, and the OpenSkies philosophy is parallel. OpenSkies is a marriage of French and American methodology and thinking. Our service mixes up a sense of warmth, style and energy. We don’t want to give our passengers the impression of the same old stuff, different day. As a small company, we can’t afford to have a bad day; and our gate agents, flight attendants and pilots have a great sense of responsibility to ensure our travelers have a wonderful experience. We have three values we live by at OpenSkies: smart, colorful and connected. Great service is not just about reacting, it is about anticipating.

Talk About Your Relationship With British Airways And The New Gateway.

OpenSkies is a fully owned subsidiary of British Airways, giving the airline the feel of a boutique airline coupled with the formidable benefits of a big airline, such as our partnership with BA’s world-class Executive Club frequent-flyer program. OpenSkies was born with the notion for research and development, as a laboratory to try new things. The BA/Iberia merger and the proposed BA/American Airlines tie-up portend good benefits.

We launched service between Washington, D.C., and Paris Orly on May 3. Orly is, without a doubt, Parisians’ favorite airport, largely due to its proximity to the city. Our five weekly flights from D.C. boast great potential for business and government travelers. The early bookings are promising.

Tell us About Your Carrer In The Airline Industry.

Before joining OpenSkies, I was with British Airways for 30 years. Willie Walsh brought me on board OpenSkies three years ago. Considering the economic climate, there have been tough times, no question, but I’ve been truly blessed to have this experience. My time with OpenSkies has been full of fun and heartache, and it’s definitely been a great ride. I’ve loved every minute of it.
