A tried and tested way for a city to put itself on the world map is to host a major sporting event. Seoul’s global image was transformed by the 1988 Olympics. Incheon’s turn in the spotlight will come in 2014, when it will be the venue of the Asian Games. A spectacular new 60,000-seat stadium is currently under construction specifically for the event.
Although the stadium is intended as a symbol of Incheon’s future, it accidentally revealed the past. Initial work on the foundations uncovered ancient tombs dating back to the Baekje Kingdom (18 B.C.–A.D. 660), as well as the remains of pit-houses from the Joseon Dynasty (1392–1897). Back then, Korea was a notoriously insular country, rarely welcoming outsiders. How times have changed.
