Overseeing human resources for CCTV News, China’s main television broadcaster, is a busy occupation. So when Glen Loveland, an American expat living in Beijing since 2007, has time off, he explores the culinary and drinks scene.

“I’m a major foodie and enjoy the finer things in life,” he laughs, and suggests skipping ultra-touristy Quanjude and dining instead at Huang Ting at The Peninsula Beijing in Wangfujing.

“Although technically a Cantonese restaurant, Huang Ting serves one of the most delectable ducks in the city,” says Loveland. He prefers cocktails at The Hidden House. “Like the name suggests, The Hidden House isn’t easy to find but well worth the search,” he says. “A speakeasy-style pub, The Hidden House in the Chaoyang District serves some of Beijing’s best cocktails.”

For relaxation, the Bodhi Therapeutic Retreat, Loveland explains, is popular with walk-in clients. “You can’t go wrong with any treatment there. There’s even a discount Monday through Friday during the daytime. I prefer the Traditional Chinese full-body massage.”
