Delta Air Lines’ elite members used to be able to snag free upgraded seats as easily as they could book an economy ticket. But now with competitive pricing and the airline’s ability to sell all its business- and first-class seats, the upgrades are harder to come by and typically require a hefty fee.

In an effort to stay competitive with other airlines, Delta announced it will revert to its old policy, offering free upgrades to premium travelers for select transcontinental routes. These same-day upgrades will be available to premium members only, and priority will go to the highest tier of travelers (Diamond Elites) before trickling down to the lower-ranking members.

This re-focus to competition for customer satisfaction is a major benefit for the traveler as service and convenience are often more motivational for business travelers when selecting airlines rather than price.
