The third-largest city in the United States and home to nearly 3 million people, Chicago is intriguing. Its history, landmarks, architecture, food and people beguile tourists and businesspeople of all ages. There’s something to delight all in the Windy City, situated on the shores of Lake Michigan.
The Great Chicago Fire of 1871 sparked the largest building boom in the nation’s history. Chicago, often noted for its architecture, is the birthplace of the skyscraper. Astounding views are on offer at the top of the Willis Tower and the John Hancock Observatory.
Art lovers will enjoy the sculpture throughout the city. Venture past the unnamed Picasso, a gift from the artist to the city, or walk among Grant Park’s Agora, 106 9-foot-tall headless torsos. You’ll find Chagall’s Four Seasons mosaic on Dearborn and Crown Fountain, a video sculpture, in Millennium Park, also home to Anish Kapoor’s first American public work, Cloud Gate, affectionately nicknamed “The Bean.”
Round out your visit at any number of landmarks. Wander Navy Pier or shop the Magnificent Mile. Visit Sue, the world’s most complete T. Rex, at the Field Museum and check out the stars at America’s first planetarium, Adler Planetarium. Laugh along with the actors at The Second City improv-comedy show, which sparked the careers of comedians Tina Fey, Jeremy Piven, Steve Carrell and more. Or spend a lazy afternoon at Millennium Park or Grant Park.
Visitors will enjoy exploring all aspects of the Windy City — and sampling its signature fare, such as deep-dish pizza, Chicago-style hot dogs and Italian beef sandwiches.
Info To Know
Two major airports — O’Hare (ORD) and Midway (MDW) — serve Chicago. Both are conveniently located to downtown, 17 and 10 miles away, respectively. The city’s main hub, O’Hare, is undergoing a massive reconstruction, recently welcoming its first new runway since the 1970s. Public transportation runs to both airports. Cab rides run from $35–45.
When it comes to wandering around the city, walking — weather permitting — is a perfect option, but the city’s public transportation is also easily navigable. The “L,” an elevated subway system, operates 24 hours a day. Extensive bus routes cover the city, running every five to 15 minutes. Chicago taxis are widely available and more affordable than in most major cities. A typical cab ride costs about $1.80 per mile, with a flat-rate $2.25 charge.
