For proof of Saint Vincent‘s obsession with cricket, witness where the Vincentians put their cricket stadium. With flat land at a premium, the locals got their priorities straight when apportioning use for a precious expanse of open ground at Arnos Vale, on the south coast. Yes, an airport was essential, and they built it there. But right beside the runway they also built a cricket stadium, the Arnos Vale Ground.
Be sure to catch a game if you can. A cricket match unfolds slowly, sometimes over several days, so there’ll be plenty of time to pick up the rules as you watch (and no shortage of locals willing to help explain the finer points).
Arnos Vale hosts matches at every level, from local to regional to international. The next visiting international team to the West Indies (as the Caribbean’s cricketing nations are collectively known) will be South Africa in June 2016. Venues are to be confirmed, but with luck Arnos Vale will host one of the fixtures.
At this most spectacular of cricketing venues, an international match is an occasion worth going out of your way to witness.
