Wandering northwest toward the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, one discovers the entrance to The Presidio, like a portal to another time and place. Originally an outpost of Spanish colonial power, later occupied by Mexico, the U.S. Army took control of it in 1846.
A national historic landmark, The Presidio today is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, offering not only acres of bucolic green space to enjoy but more than 25 miles of stunning hiking and cycling trails — not to mention one of the best views of the Golden Gate Bridge anywhere in the city.
The Presidio is home to The Walt Disney Family Museum, which explores the artistry and imagination of the man rather than the company or theme park. There’s also a top-notch restaurant, the Presidio Social Club, and a polished but understated hotel, The Inn at the Presidio, housed in the former home for bachelor officers when The Presidio was a U.S. Army post.
