Although I am spending most of my weekend watching the first games of the college softball season in the Rosemont Dome, I took a squeezed-in a visit to the Chicago Auto Show yesterday. Although I am not a huge car enthusiast, I always enjoy the spectacle of CAS.
Debuting in 1901, CAS is the largest auto show in North America. This year is the 115th CAS, more than any other auto show in North America. Held in two halls at McCormick Place along the lakefront, CAS occupies more than 1 million square feet.
Electric vehicles have a new, larger, redesigned area featuring Chicago Drives Electric indoor test track and education area. Attendees can learn all aspects of electric vehicles. Occupying 100,000 square feet, five vehicle brands are featured.
Although I won’t be there to witness it, another fun activity is Miles Per Hour, a 2.4-mile indoor run, hosted by Chicago Area Runners Association (CARA). Participants will cover as much distance as they can within an hour. I’m not in my prime running shape, but I am positive I could easily run that distance in half the time given.
The First Look for Charity is a premier fundraising staple of CAS. In its 31st year, this gala, produced by the Chicago Automobile Trade Association (CATA), expects to raise more than $2 million for 18 local charities. The black tie event features food from local stations along with a chance to win a new vehicle.
CAS started with a media preview Feb. 9 and runs through Feb. 20. There is no better place to check out so many brand-new vehicles.
