In the Egyptian Museum of Antiquities, a labyrinth of Egyptomania, discover a vast collection of Ancient Egyptian artifacts. Housed in a Neoclassical building from 1902 with its confectionary rose-hued façade overlooking the now iconic Tahrir Square, the museum is estimated to store 160,000 objects spanning 5,000 years of Egyptian history. See royal mummies, stone statues of every size, jewelry, coins, sarcophagi and funerary urns inside this fabulous pharaonic treasure chest. But undeniably, the big highlight and signature piece is the Boy King’s golden mask. The day I toured, the historic museum crowds were scarce, giving me a bucket-list opportunity to view King Tut’s jeweled funeral mask up close and personal. I walked around the glass display case countless times and stared at its iridescent beauty. Photography is forbidden, so I stood blinded by the gold and entranced by the blue lapis lazuli quarried from present-day Afghanistan. The museum is open daily 9 a.m.–5 p.m.
