And The Winner Is. . .

Dec 1, 2010
2010 / December 2010

Roll out the red carpet! Global Traveler is kicking off awards season with the announcement of the 2010 GT Tested Reader Survey winners. The competition was tough this year, as many in the travel industry gave inspired performances.

The judges (and by judges, we mean our esteemed readers) sampled all the nominees as business and leisure travels led them around the globe. Over an eight-month period, frequent travelers voted for their favorites in 61 different categories covering airlines, hotels and travel products.

The envelope, please. Drumroll. And the winner is …

Best Breakthrough Performance

The GT Tested Awards are the most sought-after in the industry. For the past seven years, they have set the precedent for the best in the travel industry. In addition to honoring old favorites, we acknowledge the industry’s best breakthrough performances by adding several new categories. This year we honor newcomers in Best Airline Cuisine, Best Lifestyle Hotel, Best Hotel Club Floor and Best Tour Operator.

It’s no easy feat to serve 5-star cuisine at 35,000 feet, yet Alitalia Airlines manages to do just that, winning the coveted title of Best Airline Cuisine. The airline’s business-class menus are crafted by Italian chefs and inspired by regional cuisines. The ever-changing menus keep the Alitalia flight experience fresh.

“We are very proud to receive the award for Best Airline Cuisine because we have made our in-flight dining experience in Magnifica Class, our premium cabin on trans-Atlantic routes, a priority,” said Antonio Temporini, senior vice president, Alitalia. “Customer satisfaction is more than 90 percent for our new menus. The win is further proof that we are meeting our goal of delivering authentic and interesting Italian regional cuisine to discerning travelers.”

At Global Traveler, we define lifestyle hotels as hotels catering to the needs and wants of travelers, instead of travelers adapting to hotel standards. The top performer in this category? Andaz, a Hyatt brand, with two properties in New York and one each in West Hollywood, San Diego and London.

What made Andaz’s performance stand out? According to Tristan Dowell, director of brands for Andaz, the properties offer an experience respectful of guests’ personal styles, with “uncomplicated, warm and friendly service.” Another hallmark of the Andaz brand is its infusion of local flavor into each hotel.

Another Hyatt brand had a breakthrough performance this year. Grand Hyatt’s Grand Club earned Best Hotel Club Floor. Grand Club amenities include complimentary breakfast, evening hors d’oeuvres and business services.

Rounding out the breakthrough stars of 2010 is Vermont-based Boundless Journeys, voted Best Tour Operator. The company offers tours to destinations in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, North America and the South Pacific.

Best Performance In A Leading Role

What traits do all the winners of best performance in a leading role have in common? Exemplary service, first-rate amenities, comfortable accommodations, innovation and dedication played key roles in each nuanced performance.

First-time winner Cathay Pacific Airways wears the Best Airline for First Class crown. The airline dedicates its performance to the passengers.

“It’s all about the people and service. The suites are great to relax or work in. The food and wine are exceptional,” said Scott Mowrer, senior vice president, Americas, Cathay Pacific. “But it’s the personalized attention from our cabin crew that makes all the difference. They know it’s not enough to make a first-class guest feel welcome. You’ve got to make them feel special.”

Another oneworld partner claimed the top spot for Best Domestic First Class. American Airlines gave an award-winning performance for the fifth consecutive year.

This year’s design awards honor the brightest in seat architecture. For the second consecutive year, Korean Air and Swiss International Air Lines dominated the Best Business-Class Seat Design and Best First-Class Seat Design categories, respectively.

“To earn this award for the second year running is not just an honor and a reward, but it’s an incentive to maintain these endeavors, too,” said Markus Binkert, managing director, head of product and services, SWISS. “And we’ll be unveiling further first-class product and service enhancements next year, as well as having a SWISS First cabin aboard every single aircraft in our long-haul fleet.”

Korean Air was a double winner this year, recognized also for its airport staff and gate agents’ performances. What can readers expect from the airline in the future?

“Looking forward, Global Traveler readers can expect more excellent service when Korean Air launches the first Airbus A380 flight from the U.S. to Asia next year,” said John Jackson, marketing director, Americas, Korean Air. “Compared to other airlines, we’ll have more room for our passengers to enjoy their flights, making Korean Air’s A380s the most comfortable to cross the Pacific.”

The distinctive all-business-class airline OpenSkies made its first appearance on the red carpet this year. Unique in its offerings, it’s easy to understand why GT readers voted OpenSkies the Best All-Business-Class Airline.

Known as the in-between class, premium economy continues to gain popularity year after year. And the best performance of 2010 in the role of premium economy? Virgin Atlantic Airways.

“Being named Best Airline for Premium-Economy Class in Global Traveler’s GT Tested Reader Survey is extremely gratifying and a testament to Virgin Atlantic’s commitment to offering travelers a middle cabin that provides added space, comfort and amenities, all at an incredible value,” said Chris Rossi, senior vice president, North America, Virgin Atlantic. “The award is especially rewarding as GT readers are the flyers that keep business and culture moving forward and recognize the premium-economy cabin advantages that enhance the flight experience.”

Avianca made its debut appearance as Best Airline in Central/South America. In Mexico, readers voted Aeromexico the top airline. The South Pacific title belongs to Air Pacific, named Best Airline in the South Pacific for the third consecutive year. LOT Polish Airlines out-performed as Best Airline in Eastern Europe, while Etihad Airways claimed the top spot in the Middle East for the second straight year.

Also reigning supreme for a second year in a row is Lufthansa, voted Best Trans-Atlantic Airline. Lufthansa plans to introduce a new business-class seat late next year, re-launch FlyNet broadband access, and continue to develop its Star Chefs program; so expect Lufthansa to remain a contender in this role.

“Receiving this award consecutively demonstrates that Lufthansa meets and even exceeds our customers’ expectations as we continue our mission to offer the best products and services to frequent travelers worldwide,” said Jens Bischof, vice president, the Americas, Lufthansa.

In Asia, the awards for best performance in a leading role go to Philippine Airlines (Best Airline in Southeast Asia), Air China (Best Airline in China), All Nippon Airways (Best Airline to Japan) and Jet Airways (Best Airline in Central/South Asia and India).

“We are proud and honored to receive this award from the readers of Global Traveler in recognition of our renowned international and domestic service,” said Nikos Kardassis, CEO, Jet Airways. “Jet Airways is committed to delivering a truly world-class service and has worked continuously to enhance the excellence of our in-flight service product on all our flights.”

Also noted for the caliber of their performances were EL AL Israel Airlines (Best Airline for Security), Delta Air Lines Sky Club (Best Airport Lounges), oneworld (Best Airline Alliance) and Changi Airport Singapore (Best Airport Dining). Seoul Incheon International Airport was chosen Best Airport in the World for the fifth straight time, and the Boeing 747 was voted Best Aircraft Type for the fourth consecutive year.

There was strong competition in the hotel category. With comfortable bedding in a supporting role, the awards go to Marriott Hotels and Resorts in Best Domestic Hotel Chain and Four Seasons for its role in Best European Hotel Chain.

Taj Campton Place in San Francisco won for its leading performance as Best Hotel in the United States. Its fellow nominees included Jumeirah Essex House (Best Hotel in the Eastern United States), The Broadmoor (Best Hotel in the Western United States), The Greenbrier (Best Hotel in the Southern United States) and The American Club (Best Hotel in the Midwestern United States). The American Club also won Best Golf Resort.

Overall, Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts was the star of the show in Asia. According to Brian Windle, vice president, sales and marketing, North America, for Shangri-La, the chain’s policy of no charge for Internet or WiFi is extremely popular with business travelers, one of many reasons the brand won. Shangri-La also recently revamped its Golden Circle Club into a recognition and rewards program.

Also earning top billing in Asia is the InterContinental Hong Kong, Best Individual Hotel in Asia. For the fifth consecutive year, Jumeirah International outperformed its competition, winning Best Hotel Chain in the Middle East.

In its role as Best Domestic Tourism Destination, New Mexico definitely delivered. India, on the other hand, headlined as Best International Tourism Destination. And when it came down to business, New Orleans (Best Domestic Business City, three years running) and Bangkok (Best International Business City) gave unrivaled performances.

Joining hotels and airlines on the awards show stage this year are the services and products that make traveling easier. T-Mobile bested in the Best WiFi Service role, while Verizon Wireless edged out the competition to earn Best Wireless Service in the World. The Langham Huntington Spa in Pasadena, Calif., out-pampered the rest in its Best Spa performance. GT readers chose Briggs & Riley (Best Luggage Brand) and Garmin (Best Travel Gadget) when navigating airports, roadways or red carpets. And when it comes to shopping, the place to see and be seen is Dubai Duty Free (Best Duty-Free Shops).

Lifetime Achievement Awards

The crowd of paparazzi is growing as our Lifetime Achievement award winners prepare to take center stage. Global Traveler readers recognized the following winners for their long-term achievements and contributions.

The star of the show is Singapore Airlines, the Best Airline in the World for the seventh straight year.

Asiana Airlines, another seven-time winner in the role of Best Airline for Onboard Service and Flight Attendants, cleaned up this year, taking a record three awards. The airline also won Best Trans-Pacific Airline and Best Airline in North Asia.

Travelers continue to be moved by British Airways’ performance. The airline nabbed Best Airline for Business Class for the sixth year in a row. Launched in 2000, BA’s lie-flat 6-foot business-class bed upped the ante. The carrier introduced a brand-new first-class cabin in 2009, and new World Traveller (business) and World Traveller Plus (premium economy) cabins will be introduced when the airline takes delivery of new Boeing 777 aircraft.

Simon Talling-Smith, executive vice president, Americas, for British Airways, said: “We are delighted to win Best Airline for Business Class in the Global Traveler reader survey. They are judged by the people whose opinions we value the most — our customers. We thank them for taking the time to vote.”

Entering our GT Hall of Fame as six-time winners are Air Canada, starring in Best Airline in North America, and InterContinental Hotels Group Priority Club Rewards for its role as Best Hotel Rewards Program in the World.

Other lifetime achievement honorees include Qantas, Best Airline to Australia and New Zealand, seven years in a row; South African Airways as Best Airline in Africa for the seventh consecutive year; and Chicago O’Hare, honored as Best Airport in North America for the seventh straight year.

In the role of a lifetime, United Mileage Plus again earned first place for the Best Frequent-Flyer Program.

“Winning this award for the seventh consecutive year is a special honor, and we want to thank our members, Global Traveler and Global Traveler readers who voted for us. At Mileage Plus, we are intensely focused on listening to what our members want,” said Jeff Foland, president, Mileage Plus Holdings. “Members want more ways to earn and use miles, and they want it to be easy. That’s why we make any open United seat available for a standard award without exceptions and why we have hotel and car awards. We really are the mileage program that actually wants you to use your miles.”

Park Hyatt channeled luxury as inspiration for its role as Best International Hotel Chain. Seven years in a row, voters preferred Park Hyatt over any other. Also continually regarded for award-winning performances is Sheraton Hotels & Resorts, the only brand to ever win the Best Hotel Chain in Latin America award. And lastly, deserving of its spot on the walk of fame is American Express Membership Rewards, earning top accolades as Best Credit Card Rewards Program, seven years running.

Most Sparkling Performances 2010

The results of Global Traveler’s annual Wines on the Wing Airline Wine Competition were first released in our August 2010 issue. This year’s winners included Austrian Airlines (Best Wines on the Wing), Qatar Airways (Best White Wine), Jet Airways (Best Sparkling Wine), Iberia Airlines (Best Red Wine), American Airlines (Best North American Wines on the Wing, Best North American Sparkling Wine and Best North American Red Wine), Virgin America (Best North American White Wine) and oneworld (Best Alliance Wines on the Wing).
