Spring is just around the corner (thank goodness!), and there’s no better way to celebrate than to surround yourself with blooms at the world’s oldest — and largest — horticultural event: the annual Philadelphia Flower Show. Presented by the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, and dating to 1829, this year’s event is currently underway at Pennsylvania Convention Center in Center City, wrapping up March 9.
Themed Gardens of Tomorrow, the show features adaptive gardens, a juried competition in horticulture and floral arranging, gardening talks and demos led by experts, a flower and garden market, special events and live performances, and plenty of food and drink.
“Each year, the PHS Flower Show aims to captivate and inspire, and this year’s edition is particularly special,” said Seth Pearsoll, VP and creative director, Philadelphia Flower Show, Pennsylvania Horticultural Society. “With a strong emphasis on sustainability and innovative design, we are excited to showcase the latest advancements in horticulture, while preserving the timeless beauty of florals. Our theme masterfully combines tradition with modern solutions, offering visitors an immersive experience that celebrates both environmental stewardship and the artistry of floral and garden design.”
Highlights include Futura Florentina in the PHS Entrance Garden, where visitors are greeted by 21 white Okami cherry trees, perennial beds, a four-sided water feature that captures light and a rain bar. Artisan Row is an experiential zone where visitors can try their hand at creating floral crowns and bouquets with fresh and dried botanicals, candles, bespoke scents, terrariums, and botanical jewelry while working in the company of eight on-site botanical artisans.
If container gardening is of interest, Potting Parties allow amateur gardeners to participate in container gardening workshops hosted by Tu Bloom, the Grammy Awards official botanical gardener. (Bonus: Take your creation home with you.) Among the host of other events are early morning tours; experiences and exhibitions including Don’t Call it Dirt, Don’t Call it Trash, Flowers After Hours, Butterflies Live! and Tomorrow’s Eden; and a collaboration between Japanese garden designer Kazuyuki Ishihara and Iftikhar Ahmed of West Coast-based TREELiNE DESiGN. Tickets for the 2025 show can be purchased online and at the door.

The city lights faded behind me as I headed west, bound for the hardwood forests, big skies and rolling hills of West Virginia’s Allegheny Mountains. Unlike the 18th- and 19th-century socialites and wellness seekers who once arrived by carriage, stagecoach or train, I traveled by car; yet, like those early visitors, I also sought The Greenbrier Resort’s famed therapeutic waters.
