New York Considers Heftier Fees for Airport Taxis

New York may soon increase the fees applied to taxis, Ubers, Lyfts and limos taken to or from a New York-area airport. If the fee is approved, one of these trips could cost you an additional $4, reports the New York Daily News.

The fee was proposed in an internal memo from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. The memo outlines a plan to levy the higher fee on pick-ups and drop-offs at New York (JFK), LaGuardia Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport. It’s similar to fees already in place at other large airports like Los Angeles International Airport and Chicago O’Hare International Airport.

A Port Authority official told the New York Daily News revenues generated from the fees would be used for airport improvements — including a new taxi dispatch system.

Naturally, representatives from the New York taxi industry and Uber criticized the fee, saying it would raise already high fares and may lead to a reduction in tips for drivers. A Lyft spokesperson, though, said the plan could benefit the industry by legitimizing ride-sharing operations at New York airports.
