The Iroquois New York

Aug 1, 2013
2013 / August 2013

Arrival/Check-In: For some reason, I had it in my head The Iroquois New York was located on 49th Street; as such, that was where I directed my cab driver, and when I realized my mistake, I ended up pulling my suitcase and other bags the four remaining blocks to the hotel. I was happy to find an empty lobby and to receive immediate assistance checking in. In the elevators on my way to my suite, I noted it was probably one of the fastest check-in experiences I’ve ever had.

Guest Quarters: The guestrooms at The Iroquois were recently renovated, but the building is old and retains much of its charm. My suite was spacious, opening into a living room with a couch, chair, end table, coffee table, mounted TV, minibar area and a work desk. The bedroom was also ample; the king-sized bed, flanked by two nightstands, was comfortable and a tempting distraction for this weary traveler upon arrival. (I was on back-to-back business trips and had landed in NYC late the previous night.) A chair and ottoman, nightstand, another TV and a tiny closet completed the bedroom. All the amenities and décor were modern and new. Sadly, my windows overlooked the busy street below (although it was not noisy) and the buildings next door.

My only complaint in my room, while it was quite large, was the tiny bathroom. With a shower, toilet, pedestal sink and a tub, there was hardly room to stand in the bathroom with the door open, and there was zero counter space. Given the size of the room as a whole, the bathroom seemed quite disproportionate.

Services/Amenities: Rather than taking that much-desired nap, I opted for a workout in the hotel fitness center. Open 24 hours, the gym was a bit more tucked away and isolated than I expected, and the machines needed an update. There is a Finnish sauna attached. It was more than adequate for my workout, though, and I had the gym to myself.

Triomphe, located off the lobby and headed by Chef Jason Tilmann, serves French cuisine for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Lantern’s Keep cocktail bar harkens to turn-of-the-century Paris, with specialty cocktails and a salon décor. Reservations are recommended. Unfortunately, my stay was packed and short — just two nights — and I was not able to enjoy either venue, but the heightened buzz makes me eager for a return visit.

The Experience: The Iroquois New York offered everything I needed for my visit, with the complimentary WiFi and more-than-standard-in-New-York guestroom space. It’s also conveniently located near Broadway and Times Square, making it a suitable choice for business and leisure travelers.

By-the-cabin Yachting Redefines the Cruise Experience

I wish this day could last forever!” my windswept 9-year-old exclaimed, his voice soaring over the Mediterranean. He gripped the helm of a Bali 4.6 sailing catamaran off the coast of Marseille, his sun- bleached hair whipping in the salty breeze. The scent of the sea mingled with the aroma of warm baguettes drifting from the Côte d’Azur shoreline. Our captain, a seasoned sailor, subtly adjusted course, letting my son feel the exhilarating pull of the wind against the sails. As the waves lapped against the hull, I realized this was no ordinary vacation — this was freedom, unfiltered.
