Whale Watching

Grootbos is the No. 1 whale watching destination in the world. During whale season, June to December, guests awaken early to enjoy a hot beverage and home-baked muffins before departing for an exclusive, close-up encounter on our custom-built whale watching boat.

Grootbos partners with Dyer Island Cruises for this amazing experience, taking guests on a two-and-a-half-hour adventure into the south Atlantic. This marine adventure includes a visit to the 60,000-strong Cape fur seal colony on Geyser Rock and nearby Dyer Island. It is not unusual to cross paths with humpback dolphins or other marine animals.

After returning to shore, guests can join an experienced Grootbos guide on a whale watching walk along the coastline. The rocky cliffs of the Dekelders coastline below Grootbos is one of the best places to view whales from the coast.

Grootbos partners with African Wings for an airborne whale watching experience. African Wings has a decade of experience and offers the encounter of a lifetime to passengers. Guests commonly view more than 80 whales in a 30-minute flight above Walker Bay.

Sharking

Another exciting experience at Grootbos Private Nature Reserve is the Great White Shark cage diving. Gansbaai is the shark capital of the world. A number of boats leave Kleinbaai Harbour daily to spend a few hours viewing sharks. This is an experience not to be missed.

Divers get into the cage and the shark is lured within meters of the cage. The divers duck under water and marvel in amazement as the creatures swim past the cage. Surface Viewing is normally suitable for people wanting to see the shark, but not necessarily come face-to-face with it.

A shark diving adventure with Marine Dynamics is accompanied by a marine biologist, who shares knowledge with guests. The boat, Slash Fin, named after a famous great white with a slashed fin that is often observed near Dyer Island, debuted in 2010 as the most advanced shark viewing vessel in South Africa.
