World Architecture Day falls on Oct. 7, and lovers of all things architecture (or perhaps you simply appreciate an aesthetically pleasing building) will find one of the most diverse showcases of design and art in Puerto Rico. With architectural styles from Spain, Africa, Taino culture, France, the Netherlands and beyond, Puerto Rico is one-of-a-kind. And don’t think you’re just going to find old fortresses and churches here, either (of course, these are just as worthy of a visit).

San Germán

Not as popular as Old San Juan, this town blends European and Caribbean architectural influences. The streets of the town sit above an elaborate tunnel system made of brick and vaults. The second-oldest city on the island, the town features historic churches like Porta Coeli, a convent and church built in 1609. Aurelio Tió Museum and Studio House invites visitors to explore the recreated home of the Tió family, one of the town’s most accomplished families, complete with antique furniture, letters, housewares and photographs. The historic district includes Manzanares Creek storm sewer and one of the oldest residence buildings in Puerto Rico, Ponce de León Family House.

Old San Juan

Old San Juan

If its UNESCO World Heritage status doesn’t prove how special this town is, a simple walk through the streets will convince anyone of its unique and historic characteristics. A living museum of Spanish-influenced architecture, Old San Juan features landmarks like El Morro and La Fortaleza, both great examples of Spanish military design. Venture through the streets and take in all of the pastel-colored facades of historic buildings, and don’t forget to stop by the San Juan Bautista church, a building blending Gothic and Baroque elements. Of course, you can’t skip Castillo San Felipe del Morro, a 16th-century Spanish fortress and citadel with unbeatable views of the sea.

Ponce

Ponce

Known as the Pearl of the City, Ponce’s architectural beauty is practically part of the landscape. The Parque de Bombas stands out with its striking red and black stripes, making it no surprise it’s one of the most-photographed buildings in Puerto Rico. See a great example of neoclassical architecture at Ponce Cathedral, and appreciate the epitome of opulent, Creole-style mansions of the 19th century at Casa Armstrong-Poventud. Just north of town is Hacienda Buena Vista, a former coffee plantation from the 19th century now a museum.

Casa Bajura

Located in the west of Puerto Rico, this area pushes the boundaries with its avant-garde flair. This bed and breakfast embraces minimalist design with locally inspired details throughout an open-concept layout.

Plan a Legendary Gathering in Honolulu

Myths and origin stories form a powerful framework for the history of Hawai‘i. Marking the horizon behind Honolulu, the ancient volcanic formation of Lē‘ahi — technically a volcanic tuff cone more commonly known to the world as Diamond Head — provides a constant physical reminder of the tales that shaped the history of this location. While researching legends for my Hawai‘i-based Dark Paradise Mysteries series (Kensington Books), I learned the tale of the demigod Maui, who used his enchanted fishing hook to reach into the sea to heave the Hawaiian islands, including Diamond Head, above the surface of the water.
