Beginning Feb. 12, Sarasota’s Marie Selby Botanical Gardens presents Tiffany: The Pursuit of Beauty in Nature as the 2023 installment of its Jean & Alfred Goldstein exhibition series. The exhibit showcases the creativity and innovation of the iconic American artist and designer Louis Comfort Tiffany.

The presentation will feature a variety of Tiffany’s well-known stained-glass windows and lamps woven into immersive horticultural displays. These original installations will lie in the garden’s famous Tropical Conservatory and throughout the grounds of the 15-acre downtown Sarasota campus.
The exhibition runs through June 25 and sees an array of colors, shapes and textures inspired by Tiffany. More than 1,000 bromeliads will form floral mosaics of stained glass in the landscape, with blooming butterfly plants enhancing outdoor vignettes.
Within the Tropical Conservatory, vibrant and bold begonias, orchids, gesneriads and bromeliads comprise the beautiful displays inspired by Tiffany and his aesthetic. Each installation showcases the influence of nature on Tiffany’s works, from dragonflies and lilyponds to daffodils and wisteria.

Throughout the exhibition, visitors can view stunning examples of Tiffany’s work in various media in Selby Gardens’ Museum of Botany & the Arts. Here, more than 40 lamps, vases and other objects generously lent from a private collection grace the space to tell the story of Tiffany and his studio. This display also shows how Tiffany revolutionized glassmaking and redefined the American decorative arts at home and abroad.
In addition to these displays and installations, a special event on Feb. 14, 5:30–6:30 p.m. sees Nadia Watts, great-great-granddaughter of Louis Comfort Tiffany, speak with Dr. David Berry, chief museum curator, Selby Gardens. In this session, Watts will discuss her family’s artistic legacy and its influence on her own work in fabrics. Tickets for this specific session can be purchased in advance here for $50 each.
Tickets are $11 for member guests, $26 for adults, $11 for kids aged 5–17, and free for kids aged 4 and under.

During “the Golden Age of Air Travel,” in the 1950s and ’60s, getting aboard an airplane was a special occasion, with passengers wearing their best outfits to suit the exclusive setting and lavish dining. This changed during the 1970s and into the 1980s, when commercial air travel became more democratized, thanks in part to the U.S. Airline Deregulation Act of 1978, and luxury was contained within business- and first-class cabins. In the last 30 years, as discount carriers found their audience, more shifts took place in major carriers’ premium cabins and lounges.

The miracle of flight feels slightly less miraculous these days. Endless delays, cramped seating and shortchanged amenities feel par for the course, and one can easily forget the wondrous fact that you’re hurtling above planet Earth, soaring above the clouds and across the skies to your destination of choice. In the olden days, you were limited to the fallibility of your outrigger canoe or horse-drawn carriage. It’s not hyperbolic to invoke the invention of the wheel when reminding oneself to stay calm and carry on in coach.
