Lovely Ambergris Caye in Belize is always a destination worth considering, and now travelers have additional incentive to book a trip. Alaia Belize, Autograph Collection on Ambergris Caye forged a new partnership with Mote Marine Laboratory, building on the resort’s commitment toward sustainable travel with a new experiential component. Educators from Mote are hosting a week-long Marine Conservation Residency from Nov. 23 to 29 that features interactive programming devised to facilitate a deep connection to the nearby Great Belize Barrier Reef ecosystem.
“Belize’s marine environment is one of the country’s greatest treasures, and we believe travel has the power to foster a deeper connection to the places we visit,” said Scott McArdle, vice president of hospitality, Alaia Belize. “Our partnership with Mote allows guests to experience the reef beyond recreation — through education, exploration, and meaningful interactions that deepen their understanding of the work being done to protect it.”
This opportunity includes hands-on STEM activities; research-inspired programming; and a selection of immersive, interactive experiences that allow a deeper experience of coral reefs and marine wildlife such as turtles and sharks. At the same time, guests will gain an understanding of both this fragile environment and the conservation efforts underway to protect it.
“We’re excited to partner with Alaia Belize to bring marine science directly to travelers in one of the world’s most extraordinary reef ecosystems,” said Dr. Aly Busse, vice president of Education, Mote Marine Laboratory. “By combining hands-on education with unforgettable experiences in and around the reef, we hope guests of all ages leave with a deeper understanding of the ocean and the important role they can play in protecting it.”
During this residency, programming will also feature Cocktails & Conversation: Happy Hour Ocean Trivia. Marriott Bonvoy members have the opportunity to bid on an exclusive Marriott Bonvoy Moments experience that includes a stay at Alaia Belize, plus a semi-private Beyond the Reef excursion and exploration of the Belize Barrier Reef while cruising onboard REEL Escape. During this expedition, Mote educators will lead an up-close experience that includes reef exploration and snorkeling at Hol Chan Marine Reserve.

During “the Golden Age of Air Travel,” in the 1950s and ’60s, getting aboard an airplane was a special occasion, with passengers wearing their best outfits to suit the exclusive setting and lavish dining. This changed during the 1970s and into the 1980s, when commercial air travel became more democratized, thanks in part to the U.S. Airline Deregulation Act of 1978, and luxury was contained within business- and first-class cabins. In the last 30 years, as discount carriers found their audience, more shifts took place in major carriers’ premium cabins and lounges.

Oct 23, 2026The Flight Less Taken: Unsung Carriers Whisk You Away to Far-Flung Destinations
The miracle of flight feels slightly less miraculous these days. Endless delays, cramped seating and shortchanged amenities feel par for the course, and one can easily forget the wondrous fact that you’re hurtling above planet Earth, soaring above the clouds and across the skies to your destination of choice. In the olden days, you were limited to the fallibility of your outrigger canoe or horse-drawn carriage. It’s not hyperbolic to invoke the invention of the wheel when reminding oneself to stay calm and carry on in coach.
