The ubiquitous 45-minute flight on what some call a “puddle-jumper” — a small one- and two-seat configuration plane in which the average human can barely fully stand up — is often the fastest way to travel between two close destinations and connect smaller towns with major airport hubs.
A new startup, Landline wants to rid the nation of these short-haul flights by encouraging travelers to take a bus instead.
The two founders envisioned a bus company to serve the same function as a regional airline, by shuttling travelers from smaller cities to nearby airports, thus removing the need for people to fly. Bus ticket fares would be factored into the overall price of the flight.
Regional airports had issues hiring pilots as the wages were low for these shorter routes, and the industry as a whole has been experiencing a pilot shortage.
One of Landline’s first customers is Sun Country Airlines, based in Minnesota. The airline is using Landline to pick up travelers from towns like Duluth and Mankato, transferring them to Minneapolis. The airline and the bus company will work together so guests won’t have to worry about missing the flight: If the bus is running late, the airline will wait for passengers.
