The fastest way to move around İstanbul is by the city’s relatively new and efficient metro. Opened in 1989, the system now has four lines, 65 stations and, like the city itself, continues to expand rapidly in all directions. A rail tunnel under the Bosporus Strait opened last year connecting the European and Asian sides of the city; and with 30 additional stations and three new lines already under construction, the system will add 360 miles of track by 2019.

Visitors can avoid fumbling for small amounts of Turkish lira each time they board a train or Bosporus ferry by using the new electronic Istanbulkart RFID Transit Pass, available at station vending machines and other outlets. Metro fares, approximately $.90 to $1.80 (higher for airport trips), are automatically discounted when using the card, and one Istanbulkart can be used to pay for all passengers traveling together. The card will soon be accepted by taxis, museums, cinemas and other services in the city.
