Despite a couple recent high-profile passenger-bumping incidents, the practice is actually down significantly on U.S. airlines. So far this year, fewer passengers were removed from flights than at any time since 1995, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation.

The DOT’s August 2017 Air Travel Consumer Report showed airline passenger bumping, or “involuntary denial of boarding” in industry parlance, reached 0.52 per 10,000 passengers January–June 2017. That’s down from 0.62 per 10,000 in the same period last year, marking a 20-year low.

The rate was even lower in the second quarter of 2017 — around 0.44 per 10,000.

Several airlines changed their policies after the incident with passenger David Dao, who was forcibly removed from a United Airlines flight in a scene broadcast across social media, creating a public relations headache for the airline.

The report also showed a slight year-over-year decline in on-time arrivals for the first half of the year, which saw 76.2 percent of flights arriving on time. That’s down from 78 percent over the same period last year.
