Until Jan. 28, 2018, the Picasso Museum in Malaga is the setting for “We Are Completely Free: Women Artists and Surrealism.” The exhibition features more than 100 works in painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, collage and film by 18 surrealist women artists including Frida Kahlo, Dora Maar, Maruja Mallo, Lee Miller, Ángeles Santos, Dorothea Tanning, Remedios Varo and Germaine Dulac. At Madrid’s fabulous Reina Sofia National Art Museum, the art and sculptures of Barcelona artist David Bestué will be on display until Feb. 26, 2018. “David Bestué: Rosi Amor” includes performance art and photography in the artist’s visual commentary of historical events and moments in the 20^th-century avant-garde movement.

Once you’ve fulfilled your artistic appetite, set off on Spain’s southern castle route. The route begins in the town of Zafra, with sites including the Gothic-Renaissance Alcázar-Palace of the Dukes of Feria, now a member of the Parador hotel system. The route also includes the 15^th-century castle of the Order of Santiago in Segura de Leon, the Moorish Castle of El Cuerno, renovated by the Knights Templar and the Order of Santiago; the magnificent castle at Fregenal de la Sierra, a Moorish structure with seven towers, donated to the Knights Templar in the 13^th century; and the Casa Fuerte house, a fortified palace in the town of Valencia del Ventoso, constructed in the 15^th–16^th centuries.
