On the Greek island of Rhodes, the so-called Colossus, a statue to the island’s patron god Helios, once straddled the harbor’s entrance, towering above all entering ships.

But the Colossus, which stood at 30 meters and is one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, collapsed in an earthquake in 226 BC. The statue’s tenure at the harbor was short-lived; it stood only for 56 years after taking about 12 years to build. Now, though, Greece is contemplating rebuilding the Colossus.

The plan being discussed would involve a Colossus statue standing at 122 meters, much taller than the original. And of course, modern technology and building techniques would be employed, so the statue would be erected more quickly, and it would be earthquake-proof. The exterior would be covered in golden solar panels rather than the original iron and bronze.

While Rhodes has plenty to offer tourists today, including a medieval center with plenty of shops and restaurants, plus a slew of ancient sites, the construction of a new Colossus would boost tourism to the Aegean island and create new jobs. The construction costs would come in around €240–260 million and would be funded by cultural institutions and crowdfunding on an international level.
