Update on the Electronics Travel Ban

Over the past couple of weeks, there has been speculation the U.S. Department of Homeland Security may ban laptops on all flights from Europe to U.S. airports, according to several reports, though no official announcements have been made.

According to Skift, an official with a major U.S. airline said DHS briefed carriers on possible plans for the ban, and David Lapan, deputy assistant secretary for media operations and press secretary, DHS, said in a statement, “No final decisions have been made on expanding the restriction on large electronic devices in aircraft cabins; however, it is under consideration.”

Although nothing has been announced officially, Delta Air Lines posted a sign informing passengers they cannot bring any electronics other than a cellphone on board. The sign, posted at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport was later retracted, according to The Points Guy.

The U.S. ban on large electronics in the cabins of flights from 10 African and Middle Eastern airports went into effect this March, after DHS cited security concerns regarding explosives brought on board but did not provide details of any specific threat.

In response to the ban, Emirates reduced its number of flights to the United States, which led to a decrease in demand for the routes. Many fear a similar ban affecting European flights will be a major blow for both legacy U.S. carriers and European carriers, as the United Kingdom, Germany, France and Italy are significant markets for summer travel to the United States.

For the time being, frequent travelers, travelers with children and business travelers continue to anxiously await news on whether or not they will be able to bring electronic devices on some of the most common flights between the United States and Europe.
