The United States offers 22 of the 50 most connected airports in the world, according to a new analysis from OAG, the global leader in air travel intelligence and analytical services.

OAG’s Megahubs Index 2015 reveals the airports with the highest number of scheduled connections to destinations the airport serves. The 50 airports listed have become “megahubs,” reflecting expanded international connectivity, airline consolidation, larger aircraft and growing demand for air travel, according to the study.

Twenty-two of the top airports, including 10 of the top 12, are in the United States.

Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport ranks as the most connected airport in the world, with more than 570,000 possible connections available during an eight-hour window in a single day this past August, followed by Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport and Chicago O’Hare International Airport.

“What genuinely surprised us is the continuing strength and dominance of U.S. airports in this category,’’ said John Grant, senior analyst, OAG, according to a USA Today report. “A lot of rhetoric has been about growth of Beijing, Dubai, and Abu Dhabi and Istanbul but the reality is they still have a considerable distance to go before they’re going to compete with the major megahubs in the U.S.”

Consolidation is driving increased connectivity at airports across the United States, with the recent mergers of United and Continental, and American Airlines and US Airways.

Following the United States is China, home to three of the top 50 most connected airports.
