It was once a distant memory: walking with loved ones to their gate to see them off, waving goodbye and watching their plane take off. This all ended after Sept. 11, 2001, in which greater security measures were put in place to account for each and every person who goes through security checkpoints. The Transportation Security Administration was established two months after the terrorist attack to prevent other hijackings, creating a unified federal administration to screen bags and passengers. Before, it was up to the individual airlines to hire their own security for screenings.
But, this could all change once more. The Transportation Security Administration just launched a program allowing non-flyers past security checkpoints at 13 U.S. airports. Called Gateside, the program aims to bring “back the moments that once defined air travel.”
The program will be available for TSA PreCheck members at airports across the country, including Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas and San Diego International Airport.
Gateside will allow eligible members to enter secure areas of these airports to meet or see friends and family from or at their gate. Eligible members can also meet someone during a layover and visit airport shops and restaurants.
Airports currently in the Gateside program include Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport, Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport, Indianapolis International Airport, Salt Lake City International Airport, John Glenn Columbus International Airport, Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport, Bill and Hillary Clinton National Airport, Will Rogers International Airport and Eppley Airfield.
TSA is already looking to expand to additional airports.
Visitors wishing to use Gateside must have TSA PreCheck and a Known Traveler Number. Visitors can apply online for a Gateside pass one–three days before the planned airport visit. The pass is free and only valid for the approved visit. Once approved, visitors must bring Gateside approval and an acceptable form of identification to the TSA PreCheck security lane.
The program is also available to families, with children eligible to visit if entered on a parent’s or guardian’s reservation.
