Last month, the Transportation Security Administration announced plans to expand use of biometrics technology in airports.

Currently, TSA and airlines use a mix of travel documents, physical identity inspection and biographical data processing to verify travelers. New technology means the TSA can expand its use of facial recognition technology and fingerprint readings at airport security lanes. These developments are expected to help decrease wait times and lines at the airport.

In June 2017, TSA tested fingerprint technology at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and Denver International Airport for TSA PreCheck-enrolled passengers. And earlier this year, it tested facial recognition technology at Los Angeles International Airport. Late last month, TSA rolled out the first biometric terminal using facial recognition at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

TSA PreCheck passengers must provide a photograph, which TSA can use to test the technology at airports.

“By testing biometrics technology in the airport environment, TSA hopes to increase security effectiveness and stay ahead of the threat,” said David Pekoske, administrator, TSA. “We will continue to leverage our partnerships to deliver enhanced capabilities to checkpoint lanes throughout the country.”
