TSA Testing More Intrusive Bag Checks at U.S. Airports

As travelers attempt to avoid checked-bag fees, carry-on bags are becoming too cluttered, resulting in difficulty screening signs of explosives. As a result, the U.S. Transportation Security Administration is testing new procedures for opened inspection at 10 U.S. airports.

TSA is experimenting with deeper probing of carry-on luggage at security checkpoints in 10 U.S. airports. The procedures include asking travelers to remove all electronic devices larger than cellphones along with bulky items like books and food that may obscure the view of the screen.

“Over the past year, TSA has been adjusting screening procedures at select U.S. airports on a trial basis in an effort to improve screener performance at the checkpoint,” said TSA. “There are no changes to what is allowed in carry-on bags. Travelers at select test locations may be asked to place certain electronics and other items in a separate bin for screening in an effort to de-clutter baggage. TSA will evaluate the results at these test locations to determine if any future checkpoint procedures should be altered.”

The test sites include the nation’s second-busiest airport, Los Angeles International Airport, and other major hubs like Detroit Metropolitan Airport, Logan International Airport, Boise Airport, Colorado Springs Airport, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, Lubbock Preston Smith International Airport, McCarran International Airport, Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and Luis Munoz Marin International Airport in Puerto Rico.

If the testing is successful, the new procedures could be rolled out nationwide, making for a quicker and more targeted search. Passengers in the PreCheck program will not be subject to the new screening procedures.
