Thousands of Americans still attempt to bring firearms through airport security in the United States, despite that action being punishable by thousands of dollars in fines and weapon confiscation.
The Transportation Security Administration reported seizing 4,239 firearms from travelers’ carry-on luggage in 2018. That equates to about 11 guns seized per day. Of these, 86 percent were loaded, and more than one I -three had a round chamber — meaning they were ready to fire, perhaps even on accident.
TSA said firearms seizures increased 7 percent from 2017 to 2018.
Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport had the highest seizure rate, with 298 guns, followed by Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport’s 219. The TSA can initiate a fine of up to $13,333 against a traveler who brings a gun to an airport security checkpoint, even if unintentional.
Other weapons seized included knives, smoke grenades, replica mortar shells and fireworks.
