As May arrives, business travelers try to fit in as many trips as possible before summer. Luxury travelers ponder where to go this summer and how to add to their collection of destinations. This month we honor the winners of Global Traveler’s annual Leisure Lifestyle Awards, recognizing those in the travel industry who offer stellar service and luxury brands that add the “style” to our lifestyle. The event takes place under the stars by the rooftop pool of the beautiful Sofitel Los Angeles at Beverly Hills. Last month I returned from Dubai and Abu Dhabi, where construction remains the name of the game. Many projects that slowed during the 2008 recession, like Louvre Abu Dhabi, now near completion. Dubai Opera is on track to open this year in the shadow of the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world. All this growth can’t occur without new accommodations, and The St. Regis Dubai Al Habtoor City is ready for business. The first-ever Arab Fashion Week took place during our stay, and we enjoyed a front-row seat to the runway from our room. This complex, anchored by the lovely St. Regis, will include a W Hotel and a Westin, making its own new address in this huge city. What the Marriott/Starwood merger has in store for this complex and elsewhere remains a huge question. We relaxed in the utmost luxury at One&Only Royal Mirage Dubai. I wish we could have spent several more days enjoying the beach, the friendly staff and fine venues. I recommend taking the boat to the sister property, One&Only The Palm, for lunch at the marina-side restaurant — a great place to watch people and yachts. Between meetings in Abu Dhabi, you must see the Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital. Tourists have discovered the falcons, but the facility is still worth your time. Don’t miss the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, an incredible treasure with amazing architecture and the largest hand-knotted carpet in the world. Rosewood Abu Dhabi offers one of the finest Lebanese restaurants, Sambusek, and a modern, luxurious feel. I flew on Qatar Airways’ top-notch business class, featuring fine cuisine and attentive flight attendants. Transferring at Hamad International Airport can be hectic; the airline may have already outgrown this brand-spanking-new facility. The business-class lounge is smartly designed but hard to find; among so many passengers I did not feel special. And with the scanning of boarding passes at the foot of the escalator leading up to the lounge, the carrier loses the personal touch it boasts on board. Like you, I’m dreaming about my next trip of a lifetime. Remember to take a day or two and visit key sites wherever you travel on business.
