Through Jan. 18, the Landesmuseum Zürich (Swiss National Museum) in Zürich presents The Tie. Men Fashion Power, a fascinating look at men’s neckwear, and what it reveals about the person wearing it. The exhibition reveals how simple personal aesthetic preferences, social standing and political point of view can often be determined by this simple accessory — from color and pattern, to how it’s worn.

The exhibition delves into the tie’s historic arc through its current incarnation, its role in self-expression, and cultural references in film, music, fine art and literature. Part of the exhibition entails archives from principal fabric manufactures in and around Zürich including Weisbrod-Zürrer, Robt. Schwarzenbach & Co., Gessner and Stehli Seiden, along with pattern books, fabric samples, drawings and sketches. There’s even a look at the tie’s place in women’s fashion, and its importance in both professional uniforms and the “uniforms” adopted by rock stars and celebrities.
