Aptly named “It Happened Here,” the new exhibition at the Alcatraz East Crime Museum in Pigeon Forge, Tenn., takes visitors on a historic tour of the state’s fascinating connection with wrongdoing, broken laws and corruption. On view through April 2019, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the Memphis assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the exhibition includes a cell key for the door that guarded assassin James Earl Ray, a hotel registration card signed by Ray using his alias Eric Galt and a courtroom sketch made by the woman who would later become his wife.
Other noteworthy people showcased in the exhibit include lawman Sheriff Buford Pusser, later the subject of the Walking Tall movies; jewel thief and Tennessee native Kenneth Jones; moonshiner Popcorn Sutton; and the famous Sevier County Perry Camp and White Cap murder investigations. Related items in the museum’s permanent collection include the white Bronco driven by O. J. Simpson while being pursued by police and the state’s electric chair, ominously nicknamed Old Smokey.
