Rides and attractions on the Boardwalk may have shuttered until next May, and the summer crowds have all returned home, but Ocean City, Maryland, still makes for an enjoyable coastal off-season getaway. And the Ashore Resort & Beach Club is a fun recent addition where you can soak up the oceanfront even as the temperature dips.
The hotel, previously known as the Ocean City Fontainebleau Resort, opened this past April after an extensive property-wide reimagining with 250 fully renovated rooms and suites and five new food and beverage concepts — a few of which remain open all year long.
Since the building lies at an angle to the water, unfortunately no accommodations are truly oceanfront, but many offer a side ocean view. All have balconies, but the small footprint and Y-shaped railings can’t accommodate chairs or a table and mainly allow you to pop out and check the temperature or see the waves. However, since the hotel sitsliterally shoreside, guests can definitely hear the soothing sounds of the surf while sleeping or relaxing.
Décor is clean, neutral and tranquil with hardwood floors, mid-century modern touches and bathrooms with rain showers and lighted mirrors. The standard ocean-view king, for example, has a bedroom with a balcony and a separate living area with table and seating for four, a second balcony, sofa bed, armchair with ottoman, mini-refrigerator, coffee maker and two flatscreen televisions. The $30 daily resort fee provides parking for one vehicle per room, complimentary use of bicycles, bottled water and use of the 24-hour fitness center. In season, guests can also take advantage of beach chairs and toys, boogie boards and the outdoor pool—and order food or beverages right from their lounge chair at the pool or beach.
Tide Room, the hotel’s signature restaurant, serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. The welcoming albeit brightly lit bar offers some tables facing the Atlantic, both inside and on the outside terrace. Chef Ronald Marvel, Jr. comes to the property after stints at Congress Hall in Cape May and the Inn at Perry Cabin in St. Michael, Maryland, imbuing the menu with mid-Atlantic ingredients, including lots of local seafood.
That’s precisely where you should look for the menu highlights, especially beloved Maryland blue crab. Deviled eggs with Old Bay Seasoning and chives can be optionally topped with succulent lump chunks of it, and a broiled jumbo lump crab cake arrives with tomato and corn salsa as well as chipotle crema and a sprinkling of queso fresco. While the tomato-based crab soup is well-seasoned, it could stand to have more of the shellfish added to the stockpot, as most spoonfuls yield only vegetables. Crusty bread is the perfect conduit to soak up the garlicky, herby broth in the bowl of linguine which also comes with a generous portion of littlenecks in the shell. Save a little room for still-warm sticky toffee pudding with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
The well-executed cocktail menu combines classics with original creations. Their riff on a Negroni infuses Campari with strawberries, while a zero-proof libation with Lyre’s Italian Bitter tastes uncannily like a Campari Spritz. Lost in the South, a whiskey sour variation with bourbon, St. George Spiced Pear, cinnamon and lemon, is seasonal without being heavy-handed.
Next door, The Tap Room serves up a more casual vibe, with seating at the bar as well as a smattering of tables inside and out. The all-day menu has some crossover with the Tide Room; but since there is more of a focus on craft beers and lighter fare, it’s a solid bet for lunch. Options include buffalo chicken quesadillas, battered Chesapeake Bay catfish, a coconut shrimp po’boy and the Cobb-like Eastern Shore salad with shrimp and crab.
The resort’s oceanfront grill, Wahoo, is open in the summer season, complete with beachy sips and a menu of crushes, the ubiquitous refreshing Maryland thirst-quencher combining various flavored vodkas with juices, mixers and fruit. Also open seasonally with a casual menu, The Shore Deck’s large, welcoming sun room offers sofas, slingback chairs, wicker furniture and pendant lamps, potted foliage and unobstructed views of the ocean. No matter the weather or the season, though, it’s the perfect place to settle in with a book or your iPad and live out your endless summer fantasies.
