Arrival/Check-in: I arrived at Campton Place on a rainy Wednesday and was greeted by a very friendly doorman who promptly took my luggage from the cab and sneaked a peek at my luggage tag to find my name, which he remembered during my entire stay. As I was an hour early for check-in, I worried that my room would not be ready; but the desk staff assured me it was not a problem. Check-in was easy and prompt, and advising me of the restaurant and bar just across the lobby, the concierge escorted me to my room; my bags were just a few minutes behind. (30/30)

Guest Quarters: My deluxe room had a view of Union Square, and although the roof for the floor below obscured part of the view, the lighted tree and lights in Union Square more than made up for it. The room, in warm tones of beige, cream and brown, had a contemporary feel enhanced by the elegant bathroom and closet doors of cherry wood and frosted glass. The bathroom featured one giant sink; Molton Brown amenities were laid out on the marble counter. The deep bathtub and shower combination was elegant and had good water pressure. My only complaint about the bathroom is that the other guestroom showers were so audible that I had to turn up the volume on the flat-screen TV to hear over the noise. Soft Frette bed linens covered a king-sized bed whose mattress was the perfect combination of firm and soft. In-room Internet access and a wide leather-topped desk made it easy to accomplish my daily work. Internet is available in-room for a daily fee, but the hotel offers free connections in the lobby and business center. The windowsill chaise longue was a nice touch to the room, with a view of the lively streets below. (25/30)

Services/Amenities: I sampled Campton Place’s restaurant, bar and room service during my stay. My first night I sat at the bar, which was appropriately dim and crowded. The wine selection was extensive, and I chose a glass of sweet Riesling, Kabinett Schloss Schonoborn Haltenheim 2007; although it’s a mouthful to say, it was crisp and very tasty. The Campton Place Restaurant, one of the finest in San Francisco, serves breakfast, lunch, tea and dinner. At breakfast I chose eggs Benedict with salmon. I never got to hit the gym, but I peeked inside and was happy to see the state-of-the-art fitness facility overlooking Union Square. (39/40)

The Experience: Well situated for the business or leisure traveler, Campton Place is 50 feet from the entertainment of Union Square and within walking distance of most financial district Fortune 500 companies. Restaurants and shopping to suit all tastes lie just outside the door. The concierge and doormen know all the unique local places to visit, so guests should not hesitate to ask for advice. The luxurious service and facilities at Campton Place make this city even more enchanting.
