The sovereign city-state of Monaco and its French Riviera address have a well-deserved reputation as a destination for elite travelers, but that doesn’t mean this tiny setting (less than a square mile) does not pay attention to sustainability. A number of fabulous hotels have been recognized for ethical and sustainable practices.

Weather and crowd-wise, April and October are ideal times to visit these elegant properties: Awarded Green Globe certification in 2019, the belle-époque Hotel Hermitage Monte-Carlo manages to combine extreme luxury with green initiatives, including commitments to the country’s National Energy Transition Pact and the Mr. Goodfish agreement to respect maritime resources. The Mr. Goodfish agreement played out through a decision to serve sustainably caught fish, including the menu at the property’s Michelin-starred restaurant.

Also part of the Mr. Goodfish plan, Hotel Métropole Monte-Carlo continues to make strides toward preserving biodiversity and reducing waste through programs like serving only sustainable seafood. Practices also include monitoring water and energy consumption, as well as training all employees in the concept of a “Green Attitude” to reduce the impact of hotel operations on the environment.

The Green Globe-certified Hotel de Paris has been entirely refurbished to BREEAM standards (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method), the oldest existing method for assessing building methods based on tough environmental assessments.

Four heat pumps generate energy for heat and air conditioning at Fairmont Monte Carlo. The hotel is a signatory to both the National Energy Transition Pact and the Prince Albert II Foundation’s Wood Charter to manage forests and work against deforestation. These efforts are all good to know when you’re sipping a cocktail at the property’s Horizon Rooftop restaurant and admiring views of the Mediterranean.
