Supersonic air travel could become a reality. Boom Supersonic ended its latest round of funding as it moves closer to producing a Mach 2.2 supersonic airliner. The company said it closed a $100 million Series B investment round, and its total raised is now more than $141 million.

Boom’s goal is to make the world’s first economically viable supersonic airliner, named Overture.

The company is making a one-third-scale, manned prototype of the eventual plane; the prototype will take off later this year and Boom says it will be the “first independently developed supersonic jet and the fastest civil aircraft ever built.”

Boom has pre-orders for 30 full-sized Overture planes, buyers including Japan Airlines and the Virgin Group. The plane should be finished by the mid 2020s.

Boom claims its planes will not be any louder than the subsonic aircraft in use today, and will be able to fly similar routes.

Today, the time and cost of long-distance travel prevent us from connecting with far-off people and places,” said Blake Scholl, founder and CEO, Boom Supersonic. “Overture fares will be similar to today’s business class — widening horizons for tens of millions of travelers. Ultimately, our goal is to make high-speed flight affordable to all.”
