Explore the land of castles, hills and rivers up close with a self-guided walking tour of Slovenia organized by On Foot Holidays. The Karst – Culture and Landscape involves three to five hours of walking each day, with easy to easy-medium terrain. Mountain guide, woodworker and retired architect Janez Golob, a native of Slovenia, designed the route. Paths begin in the Slovenian Karst in Ljubljana and end in Trieste on the Italian coast.
Along the way, you’ll traverse meadows and woodlands between traditional villages. Highlights include Predjama Castle, the ancient hilltop settlements at Stanjel and Tabor, “disappearing” lakes and rivers, and optional visits to view Lipizzaner horses or the caves located at Skocjan and Postojna.
Cuisine is another highpoint, featuring local venison, rabbit and mushrooms, honey ice cream, white wines from Malvasia, and royal Teran — known as the “wine of the mighty.” Accommodations range from city hotels to working farms, where you’ll enjoy home-cooked meals and distinctive local wines. Mountain bike rentals are optional for some stretches, and add-on days in Venice can be arranged.
