Singapore Experiences First Big Zika Outbreak

The Ministry of Health in Singapore confirmed more than 40 cases of the Zika virus, all locally transmitted. Currently, the Ministry is focusing efforts on the Aljunied Crescent/Sims Drive area but warns other regions and all hospitals to watch for the virus’s common symptoms. More positive cases are expected in the coming days. Will the outbreak discourage travel to Singapore in the months ahead? Many countries are upping their travel warnings for the destination. The Taiwan Centers for Disease Control issued a statement advising pregnant or potentially pregnant women to postpone all travel to Singapore. Malaysian authorities ask any traveller returning from the Rio Olympics or any Zika-positive destination to undergo screening and blood tests, pointing to nearby Singapore, Indonesia and Thailand. Many other countries are doing the same. In an attempt to curb the spread, Singaporean officials are currently focusing on mosquito prevention. “We expect to identify more positive cases. Given that the majority of Zika cases are asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic, and mosquitoes in the affected areas may already have been infected, isolation of positive cases may have limited effect to managing the spread. We should focus our efforts on vector control,” the Ministry of Health and National Environment Agency said in a joint release. Hong Kong also announced its first positive case. However, the patient recently traveled to St. Bart’s, where it is expected she contracted the virus. Regardless, the city government is working to decrease the mosquito population within the area. The Korea Centers for Disease Control, which confirmed 10 Zika cases contracted after travel to the Philippines and Vietnam, forecast even more cases to appear all over Southeast Asia, especially starting in October, the region’s rainy season.

Santa Fe, New Mexico, is a small town that’s big on historic landmarks, buildings, parks and Western lore.
