Surround yourself in silver — literally — in Västmanland, Sweden in the disused Sala Silvermine’s underground guest suite. Billed as the deepest hotel room on the planet, the Mine Suite is located 508 feet below the surface, with lustrous chairs, tables and other furnishings made of silver. All that glowing is enhanced by candlelight and silence. Guests are given a tour of the mine’s labyrinth of passageways before being escorted to the suite. Guides then retire to the surface, leaving guest to their own devices with a supply of cheese, fruit, sparkling wine and chocolate.
In the morning, breakfast is delivered, and guests are later ushered to the surface. Bathroom facilities are just down the corridor from the suite, and showers are available topside. Guests are connected to a member of staff on the surface throughout the night via intercom (cell phones are useless). Warm blankets are provided, but the suite maintains a chilly temperature of 36 degrees Fahrenheit — so bring someone who’s good at snuggling.
