The next time you’re delayed on a Southwest Airlines flight, you no longer need to wait in the ever-growing customer service line. Instead, request a $75 credit online thanks to a new rule implemented by the Department of Transportation.
Delays and cancellations must be caused by something Southwest Airlines could control, such as staffing and maintenance, and the flight must arrive no less than three hours later than planned. Flights must also be delayed or canceled within seven days of departure.
While the sum may seem small, customers can now request the voucher with ease via the airline’s help center online. Before, passengers of significantly delayed or canceled flights had to wait in line at the customer service desk. These lines can take hours when an entire plane’s worth of people (not to mention multiple planes when there’s several cancellations or delays) queues up.
The Department of Transportation specified, however, that delays caused by weather are not covered under the new rule. The ruling follows the holiday meltdown Southwest Airlines suffered in 2022.
