The city of Shanghai has just taken glitz and glamour up a few notches (seven to be exact) with the opening of its first self-proclaimed 7-star hotel located on the Bund, the city’s exclusive waterfront strip along the Huangpu River.

Wanda Reign on the Bund opened in June 2016 and has since become the go-to accommodation and meeting point for China’s upper class. Although there is no official 7-star designation awarded to hotels, the developers who spent three years constructing the palace used the false classification as a marketing strategy.

The 51st property under the Wanda Hotels and Resorts name features a private members’ club on the second floor, Club Reign. Accessible spaces for all guests include the three-room spa, a KTV lounge for private karaoke performances and two on-site restaurants: French restaurant MARC and Japanese restaurant HE, which imports every single ingredient and utensil from Japan. Guests can even rent luxury cars, including a four-hour trip in a Rolls Royce for $800.
