Shanghai Hongqiao Airport’s Terminal 1 reopened after three years of renovations. In doing so, it becomes the first airport in China with self-service options at check-in, security and boarding for domestic flights.

Passengers on international and domestic flights can use one of 28 self-service check-in machines to print tickets and luggage tags after they scan passports or ID cards in T1 section D. There are eight self-service security machines that use facial recognition technology and process passengers in 12 seconds — 20 more machines are available at boarding.

Anyone not wishing to use the check-in machines can visit one of six staffed counters.

The machines are already in operation and 86 percent of 2,239 passengers used them on a recent morning, according to Spring Airlines. At peak morning hours, passengers stood in line for fewer than three minutes at check-in counters.

Shanghai Hongqiao Airport is China’s seventh-largest by passenger numbers, and Terminal 1 serves about 10 million customers annually. The airport’s two terminals serve a total of 40 million.

The airport rolled out other renovations, including an increase in parking bays, from 700 to 1,250, and space for duty-free shops expanding to 2,000 square meters.
